Mathews Building U.N.S.W. Kensington
Located between the Sydney CBD and the airport, the 16 storey building occupied a prominent position overlooking the Randwick racecourse to the north and the open terrain of the Sydney airport to the south. Rain driven by strong southerly winds had frequently caused damage as a result of water ingress.
Similar to facades of this era, the precast concrete panels had not been installed with an air seal that linked effectively to the window system. The installed window system was also tired and dated with defective awning sashes and stays.
Repair of the damaged stays and reconstruction of the awning windows was not cost effective so the strip windows were replaced with a purpose built window which completed the air seal to the whole façade.
